When we arrived in Chinatown, I asked Sanka and his men to wait outside. I wanted to brief Willie before letting these men into his place. He wasn’t a fan of strangers.

“Sei, I don’t know these men, and you want to invite them inside,” Willie said as he sipped his tea. “That’s not how things work.”

“I realize that, but under the circumstances, I believe it’s necessary. We need to secure the building. These men come highly recommended from a trusted contact.”

After a bit more back and forth, Willie agreed to let the team enter. I made a quick introduction before walking Sanka and his men through the premises.

Sanka's recommendations started with replacing the entire front door, as I had already suspected, in addition to reinforcing the windows.

“I have a man in New York who can deliver a door. I can modify it to have a security pad that requires a keycard, fingerprint, eyeball…it’s up to you. Also, we need to wire the door and windows with sensors. Anyone trying to enter will trip a silent alarm. We’ll place cameras in and outside the building. I also recommend placing cameras on the building directly across the road and at either end of the street. Let me worry about how that gets done.”

“How will I control all of this?” I asked, a bit worried he’d want to install a command center in Willie’s place.

“You will be able to control everything from a smartphone. If an alarm is tripped, you’ll know. You’ll be able to cycle through all of the cameras. You don’t need to be on the property.”

We headed up to the roof, where my biggest concern lay.

“This is problematic, Sei,” Sanka said. “Having sensors up here will notify you, but it won’t stop anyone from crossing over from the building next door. We’ll reinforce the door, and that’ll slow them, but if they want to get in, C-4 will do the trick.”

“What about snipers from the building across the road?”

“If I install ballistic glass, it’ll stop handguns easily but not a high-powered rifle—especially if someone fires a 50 caliber. My advice would be to replace the windows that are most vulnerable with steel. Even thermal imaging won’t work then. Nothing to see, nothing to shoot at. The rest of the windows can be outfitted with ballistic glass.”

“How long will it take to do all of this?” I asked.

“Two full days. But I want to warn you now: It's impossible to make this place one hundred percent secure. If someone wants to get in, they will get in. But you’ll at least have a heads up and can prepare.”

I gave Sanka the okay to move forward. I wanted to make it as hard as possible for anyone who actually figured out where I was to get to me. The precautions mainly were for Willie’s sake. I knew I could defend myself, but I couldn’t be sure I could protect Willie from whatever unknown threats arose. And I was the reason why any harm could come to him.
